If you need to disassemble your G1 you have come to the right place. I would FIRST download AND READ the relevant parts of the manual (link below). Then look at some other videos and watch mine so you get a feel for the disassembly steps. Don’t just start taking a torx to your beautiful G1. (If you don’t know what “torx” means, close this video and think twice about doing anything to your G1. However, if your G1 is broken and you cannot make a warranty claim, then it’s OK to look up the definition of “torx” and take an entire Saturday to attempt to fix the phone. The manual also includes reassembly instructions. www.bullpooper.com Tools You Need and Some Procedure Tips: PUT AWAY THE PETS SOMEWHERE SO THEY DON’T JUMP ON YOUR DESK OR TABLE AND SHOOT YOUR G1 PARTS ALL OVER THE ROOM. A few torx bits (if you don’t know what those are, you should NOT be taking apart your phone, unless you are willing to go through this slowly, taking the time learn each step BEFORE going through it ); A plastic knife, non-serrated if possible (from the deli, for example); A large area with a white towel spread out (to stop and catch bouncing screws that you WILL drop, white in color so you can see the parts sitting on the towel right under your nose); A weekly pill dispenser or two from the pharmacy. These are long plastic boxes with 7 compartments, one for each day of the week. Excellent to hold screws and parts from each “section” you are disassembling; Some TV dinner trays with compartments (or three to four small bowls); One of those headbands that has magnifying lenses like the jewelry and watch people wear. Those are handy, but most people don’t have those. See the “Related Videos” box for other “how to disassemble the G1″ videos. Those are BETTER to see the disassembly process. With the videos, PDF manual, proper tools, and materials I mention, even a noob should be able to get the G1 disassembled and put back together. Of course, one experienced in these matters might be able to disassemble, repair and reassemble in 60 minutes. A noob might need an entire Saturday or Sunday. THIS IS NOT A CONTEST. No one is watching, so take your time. Besides, no one will give a rip how fast you handled the task. So take as much time as is needed to do the job right. Additional Details: You need some torx head bits/drivers (sets of four to five torx bits are about $10 on ebay, more at the hardware store). Use some the seven-day plastic prescription dispensers to place and sort the screws inside each compartment (Sunday thru Sat), by type. This way you don’t lose them and you have them sorted by type and size. If you have a few TV dinner trays, those are great to place the various parts so they don’t get lost and stay somewhat organized, such as the case, the motherboard, GPS, bluetooth, camera, wifi and so on. BE CAREFUL. The G1 is far more complex than other smartphones. For example: Display: It has an easily broken touchscreen, if you force it out (some have adhesive tape holding the display in place) you can bend and crack the screen. Connectors: The wifi, GPS and bluetooth modules use ribbon connectors to connect with the motherboard. These are small plastic strips with micro-thin conductive strips to make the connection. A fingernail or screwdriver tip can easily scrape off or remove the conductive material (a copper or silver color). If you do that, good luck finding that ribbon connector. Finally: Obviously you VOID YOUR WARRANTY if you take the G1 apart.

Like everything else that changes and has trends, so does technology. In a sense, that makes it no different from fashion, cars or anything else that comes and goes. Yet unlike those things, technology is always evolving. Newer and better all the time, smaller, faster, higher capability and capacity than the last. Here I will list what is predicted to be hot sellers for 2009 in the ever changing world of technology, while everybody’s pocketbooks/wallets are hurting.

This year, it has been predicted to have booming PC sales, and if its anything like last year-laptops will also have a rising sales. With more and more people trying to have their own small businesses during these tough economic times, they will seek out the latest and fastest PCs. They also will seek out all in one printers to help complete their new at home offices and to save space. We’re likely to see prices drop though, as stores will be forced to lower them in order to survive. It will be a good year for the buyer and bad for the stores.

With the DTV switch coming up and analog going out, we can expect to see Digital TVs prices dropping as well. Like all technology, once it comes main stream, prices drop. Also cable company’s may lose even more customers as more stations and sub-stations will be popping up.

Smart phones and PDA’s may flop, with issues from Blackberry and Iphones people may get turned off. Also with their high prices for services don’t help the wallet.

Mp3 players becoming more mainstream, Ipods might lose the lead. With their high prices and issues known with the newer models, might help lesser known brands gain in sales.

Video Game consoles will likely do well, Xbox and Playstation both have lowered their prices and Wiis are selling very well. Also two new consoles are coming out this year from lesser known GP2X and Zeebo.

Microsoft’s Windows new OS, Windows 7 is in BETA stage and might come out as soon as this year.

Open source software and freeware will be more in demand as people don’t have the money to splurge on pricey software.

Social Networks will still be popping up with no end in sight, the companies who run them can make good money on it.

Blogging and citizen journalism will be growing and making a larger splash in the media world. Perhaps even hurting TV, newspaper and radio in news.

And that’s the prediction for the trends of technology this year 2009. Nobody knows for sure what this year will hold, but we sure can hope for the best.

Why is Music Important for Kids?

This question has been debated for as long as time has existed. Even the great Greek and Roman philosophers approached the question: is music something that should be taught and does it help the development of children? Plato answered “I would teach children music, physics, and philosophy; but most importantly music, for in the patterns of music and all arts are the keys to learning.” And again “what then is the education to be? Perhaps we could hardly find a better than that which the experience of the past has already discovered, which consists, I believe, in gymnastic, for the body, and music for the mind.”

In all cultures of the world music plays an important role. While these roles may change depending on the culture it is impossible to separate music from the life of an individual. While some may argue the role of music in our lives it is impossible to escape it. Even in the popular culture of Australia it is impossible to go shopping without hearing music. Music provides a means of communication and expression of culture and individual identity.

Children are immersed in music from birth and will be for their entire life. If this is the case why teach it? Is not the constant immersion in music enough? To this I say; is the fact that we witness the results of scientific principals on a day to day basis result in the understanding of those scientific principles? No it does not and likewise for music it does not either. The day to day encounters we have with music can move us but the understanding of this music can help us grow as individuals.

In many cultures the family plays the main role in music education. Families are most commonly the ones that teach children the music of their culture. As young children, we are commonly sung nursery rhymes. These provide entertainment for the child and often information in small repeated fashion. Children learn through the repetition and structure that the information was delivered in. many nursery rhymes teach fundamental life lesson and therefore sets music up as a means of educating. Children learn from music from a young age and will continue to for the rest of their lives. In a world where globalization and consumerism are dominating cultural identities are drifting into the background and children are more likely to be sung pop songs as lullaby’s than nursery rhymes. The benefit of nursery rhymes and progressive learning has become an issue. Children are missing out on fundamental learning opportunities.

The Mozart effect which gained a large following in the 1990’s claimed that listening to Mozart as a baby will make a child smarter. While this movement was short lived and there is little proof that it works there has been no denying that children who learn music will achieve higher in other aspects of their academic life. In earning music children learn to express their identities, gain confidence and develop sense of time and space. A research team at the university of Munster in Germany discovered that students who study music have more developed abstract reasoning skills which are closely linked to learning in the areas of science and maths.

I do not believe that there is any argument to this question…music is a vital part of a child’s education and should be taken seriously. Listening to music is not enough! A child must learn to think musically and that is what will help assist the development of the child and their academic development.

Hurricanes cause billions of dollars in damage each year, including damage to computers. Unfortunately, computers can be much harder to replace if lost than other electronics because of the data contained on their hard drives and time spent tweaking and overclocking them. Being a Katrina evacuee and survivor myself, I know how important a computer can be after a natural disaster. With hurricane season looming in the days ahead, I decided to write a guide to help people protect their computers and data during a natural disaster.

Part I: Backing Up Data And Things to Have

Hurricane season or not, you should always be backing up your data. Whether you plan on riding out the storm (a bad idea) or evacuating to another location, you should have a backup of your computer data either on an external hard drive or optical media such as CD-Rs or a DVD. Be sure to keep your data in a very safe place, such as a water proof safe. Never leave your backup by your computer.

Next, you should have the following things to make life after the storm easier:

Phone numbers for insurance, computer or computer parts companies, and phone numbers for all local ISPs (including dial-up and satellite). Having your insurance phone number and phone numbers for your computer company will help get your computer replaced faster if it is damaged. I can’t stress enough how important it is for you to have phone numbers and even access disks for all of your local ISPs! After Katrina, the Internet was the only way many people could contact the outside world. As fate would have it, my broadband was down for 3 weeks and none of the other broadband ISPs would except new orders due to the storm, leaving me with my old friend Dial Up, whom I thought I had buried 8 years ago. Your best bet is to use a satellite ISP as they have no equipment that can be destroyed by a hurricane and cause an outage.

Back ups of all your file, have all application and game discs, CD keys, drivers, and operating system discs on hand.

Photos of your computer as well as proof of what parts are inside.

In the event your quad SLI rig is destroyed, you don’t want your insurance company to replace it with something of a significantly lesser value, do you? It’s very easy for people to claim “I had this, this, and this and it all cost me $3000 last month.” after their 3 year old Athlon XP rig is destroyed. As a result, your insurance company may be hesitant to replace your expensive computer parts unless you can prove you own them. Also know to what extent your insurance (including flood insurance) will replace damaged property. While some policies will cover the replacement cost of damaged property, some may only cover part of the damage cost. Also know what your deductible is.

Blog or Social Networking Profile

Social networking sites such as myspace were great after Katrina. Friends could find out where other friends had evacuated to simply by reading each others’ myspaces.

Generator and Gas

A generator can power many things, including home computers! Check with your local generator supplier about any local laws about generators, how to safely and properly set one up, and how well they will work with computers. Because generators provide unstable power, a battery backup UPS and a surge protector are a must. Do not count on gas to power your generator being available in the aftermath of the storm. It’s best to have a good supply of gas as well as a few empty gas containers on hand.

Part II: Evacuating with Your PC

Like any family members or pets you may have, your PC isn’t something to leave behind if you can avoid it. While your first priority should be getting out alive, you should consider bringing your PC with you if you can room in your car. You can’t count on your destination to have good computers, high speed Internet, or any entertaining activities for that matter. Being in another place during a hurricane is stressful. Between watching your home town being walloped on CNN and The Weather Channel, the people around you as well as yourself will be tense and worried. Having a nice computer to browse the web with and play Battlefield 2 is a sure entertainer. In fact, the Internet was the only place where I could get information about my very neighborhood after the storm! Local newspaper message boards were packed with evacuees from all over my area and had plenty of information about damage to share.

Even if you can’t bring your PC, at the very least bring your hard drive with you! If your home is looted in the aftermath of the storm, the last thing you want is your personal data in someone else’s hands. Be sure your hard drive is in an anti-static bag to avoid needless damage to it.

If taking a long road trip, you should probably place some sort of padding or foaming (even a blanket will work) around your computer or hard drive to protect it from the vibrations of the car. Don’t bring your monitor unless you have an LCD and there’s room for it.

Part III: Leaving Your PC at Home

If you don’t have room for your PC in your car, don’t plan on staying with it during the storm. There are several safeguards you can take to prevent unnecessary damage to your computer:

Cover any open parts of your computer case (such as fans and vents) with tape. Don’t use duct tape unless you want to risk taking paint off your case or a sticky mess.

Cover your computer with as many trash bags as you need. At least 2 trash bags per computer are recommended.

Consider how high your home is above sea level, the risk of flooding, and other factors. If you know your home could flood, you should put your computer on the second floor. But if you know your roof is weak and could easily blow off, don’t put it on the second floor! Find an enclosed space with no windows (such as a closet) as close to the center of your home as possible. If your computer case has a side window, make sure it’s facing towards the ground or against a wall. If you can, place other objects around your computer to offer it additonal protection from blowing rain and flying debris.

Part IV: When the Worst Happens

In the event your PC becomes damaged during the storm, don’t fret. If the damage is from a fallen tree or a piece of flying debri, there is nothing you can do. If your computer becomes flooded, however, there are steps you can take to recover it. Below is a basic guide on how to recover a flooded computer.

Do not turn on the computer! Make sure it is unplugged! While you may be anxious to see if your computer can run, don’t do it if you know it’s been exposed to water. You’ll just end up causing more damage if you do. Remember to keep your computer unplugged.

Remove components that work. If you can see a water line in your computer, take out all the components above it and put them in a safe place.

Let your computer dry. Let your computer dry for a week or so. One drop of water in a running computer could mean disaster.

Remove the CMOS battery and other parts.

Use a solution of 90% alcohol or more to wash the various components of your computer, including connectors. If necessary, use a paint brush to remove stubbon crud.

Let your computer dry completely.

If the above doesn’t work or you have data you can’t risk losing on your hard drive, consider professional computer recovery. Do not plan on salvaging the power supply, CMOS battery, the hard drive, optical drives, or any fans if they have been flooded. Also remember to take pictures of any damage to your computer before you attempt to fix it for insurance purposes.

Hopefully this guide will help people save their computers from hurricane related damage. A computer is a very useful tool that should be part of any good disaster supply kit. Trust me when I say it’s an important thing to have around. However, remember a computer is only a material possession. Like all material objects, they can be replaced. Human and animal life, however, cannot. Use good judgement when deciding whether or not to take your computer with you and while repairing it if it damaged.
